I recently graduated, and now a lot of my younger friends are asking me what it takes to be successful in college. Apparently not a whole lot. All you have to do is speak from the heart like my friend.
This essay was written by a friend of mine in his World Music class. Keep in mind, he got an ‘A’ on this:
“Nameless Friend”
World Music \\ Summer 2007 \\ CD Listening
The first CD that I listened to was from various parts of the world. A lot of ethnic music coming from Cuba and Latin countries and also the United States of America. I believe that most of this music would fall under the categories of traditional and classic. The music being presented has a lot of influence from the cultures around them and I appreciate the music being played. I believe all the music being played has a lot to do with the environment with in which they are located in. The music that I listened to was quite different song to song. I really enjoy listening to the Scottish music personally because it brings a lot of emotions out of me. This piece that they play is very nationally known and also globally known to the world. I really enjoyed listening to this piece in particular because it brought out a lot of deep emotion inside of me. It makes me feel sad for some reason. I believe that this music was made in times of war and morning to remember the people that are not with us anymore. Every time I hear those bagpipes I really get into a mood of being in a funeral or something similar to that. The environments like I pointed out have a great influence on the music being played I believe.
I believe when I listen to the Afro Cuban salsa song I could believe that I am in Cuba. The music feels very tropical with its drums and rhythm being played. Every time I keep listening to this particular song I believe I can picture myself in that location and the environment around me. Listening to the gospel music has a special place in my heart. The music is very heavily influenced by its environment and represents the struggle that the African Americans went through in this country. The struggle is portrayed in the music they are singing. I can imagine myself in a church while listening to this music. I want to go to church like a when I was a young boy growing up in Atlanta. It represents the beginning of gospel that influenced a lot of other types of music like rock and roll. However when I listen to the music from Trinidad Calypso it really sounds like they are singing in English. It has a lot of English influence in it. They are singing about the true American way of life; paying bills and struggling day by day. The beat reminds me of earlier version of Italian beats that have been played in movies such as The Godfather. The steel band song really reminds me of tropical tune that is interesting and relaxing to listen to. It flashbacks to the days that I played Super Mario Brothers with my sisters at the arcades. The music is very influential by its environment and its oblivious by listening to it also.
Here are a few of my favorite lines:
“The music is very influential by its environment and its oblivious by listening to it also.“
Oblivious? Even the music isn’t aware you’re listening to it!
“I can imagine myself in a church while listening to this music. I want to go to church like a when I was a young boy growing up in Atlanta.“
Going to church is cool, but the problem is my friend’s never been to Atlanta.
“A lot of ethnic music coming from Cuba and Latin countries and also the United States of America.“
I’m still trying to figure out if this is a sentence.
I believe he used ‘believe’ fifty times in this essay. Regardless, it doesn’t matter what my beliefs are, he got an A!
Can’t wait for this one.

Yup. We’re back at it.
