One great thing about doing standup in SF is that there are a lot of small rooms within minutes of each other. That means every night you can potentially hit 2 or 3 rooms. In my efforts to try to step up my comedy game, I’ve decided for the next month to go up every night with new material. Retire the ‘go-to’ stuff that you know works and dive into freshly written bits.
That means every time I go up for say a 10 minute set, from beginning to end the (un)lucky audience will hear all new material. Don’t cushion the jokes with stuff that works. Just embrace the bomb, and hopefully try to find some gems out of the silence. I think one of two things will happen; either I will completely lose the audience and everyone will be like ‘Wow that sucked’, or I’ll find some really clever stuff that could seriously work.
It sounds so awful it just might be fun. I’ll track how this goes down here.
